The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis

Just wonderful to re-read this simply compelling and compellingly simple quest story from Lewis – perhaps my favourite Narnia book.

The sweet water of the Last Ocean and Reepicheep’s cresting of the final wave are truly memorable and fulfilling, but on this reading it was Eustace’s experience of ‘dragonhood’ which punched most powerfully.

“He was almost afraid to be alone with himself and yet he was ashamed to be with the others”

He was being readied to meet Aslan, and it is arguably this mindset which allowed Eustace to endure the transformation wrought upon him by the Great Lion.
